A JW is a well trained sales-person, the uniform, the material, and the delivery make for solid sales every month no matter what.

You're right though it does seem a bit unrealistic so in this case we have to definitely remember it's only a movie. In real life Brother and Sister Milktoast would not have been the least bit understanding and would've staged several well intentioned interventions to save David Barker.
The Christmas tree in the living room of their apartment was the icing on the cake for me, I remember some old school info about the Bethelites even celebrating Christmas way back in the day.
The movie played down witness overreactions to any semblance of change away from religion.
i was remembering today this situation that i let get out of hand because i was too damaged to let my co-workers and my boss know i was a jw when i was still inside.
it was hard to explain to people something so foreign and out of this world as being a witness and never before had the difficulty been as hard as when one of our co-workers birthdays came around.. i dreaded the moment because i'd played pretty cool and dodged any questions that might reveal my religious inclinations.. but:.
my boss came over to my desk and gave me this card to sign, she asked if i'd like to sign it.

so i have been replying to letters from a jw friend who suddenly started writing to me after i've been out for nearly 25 years.. i have mentioned things like the poverty that pioneering causes from my own experience, worrying about having enough money to buy food.. i also said that the scrimping would have been worth it if we had been saving to buy a home or go on lovely holidays.. instead we ended up with nothing materially and we were living in a tiny rented flat when we left.. when i think of all the places i wanted to visit with my husband but couldn't because we were pioneering and had no money and now it is too late because my husband has died at the age of 54. we did get to visit some beautiful places but we ran out of time.. what i was trying to say to her was - life's too short.
stop waiting for the new system, get on with your life.
stop exhausting yourself in that religion.
Xanthippe, I never actually full time pioneered but when I graduated high school I did the auxiliary for about a year straight and did not feel pushed as much as I felt heavily encouraged to do it. I remember this one elder in particular had "encouraged" me to try out for Bethel by starting to pioneer but the thought of moving to NY to work for free didn't sit well with me.
Anyways the pressure of making time sucked, I mean there were moments I didn't even care about what I was telling people as long as I could make my hours. After that I never auxiliary pioneered ever again, I couldn't see where all the joy came from as I was too worried about upsetting Jehovah by not making time or by not pioneering so either way I seemed to be boned. You're so right, life's too short to waste worrying about worrying- hopefully your friend can see your point and take advantage of time before it escapes.
today i went on my instragram and realized that one of the jw "friends" i have on there didn't have any or her wt propaganda, and propaganda i mean pictures of her and all the children (under 10) she is studying with and helping to bring in the truth.
so i looked to see if she was still "following me" nope, so i looked to see if i was still "following her" nope, which means she blocked.
so then i go on to my jw facebook and she is no longer friends with me..... so now i know what you are thinking, she has blocked and unfrieded me because she saw my apostate video...or word finally reached her.....nope!

Worldly people don't give two shits about your status in the congo nor you're comments, hours, or anything else the witnesses use as a measuring stick of your love for God. Basically "wordly" people take the time to learn about you, be your friend, not judge, and show the love that Jesus guy always spoke of.

Missfit, I understand how difficult the middle is as there are strong reasons to continue the meeting attendance but how hard it is to keep up the song and dance when you don't feel the same way about it.
